Magnification in Spherical Mirror

The size of an image formed by a plane mirror is the same as that of the object. This is not always the case with spherical mirrors. A convex mirror forms an image that is smaller than the object. You might have noticed this is the rear-view mirrors of vehicles. The size of the image formed by a concave mirror can be smaller than, equal to or larger than the size of the object, depending on where the object is placed in front of the mirror.

Linear Magnification produced by a spherical mirror gives change in the size of image with respect to the size of the object. It is expressed as the ratio of size of image and the size of the object. Let large h_{o} and large h_{i} denote the object-height and the image-height respectively.

large Magnification;(m)=frac{h_{i}}{h_{o}}

Magnification can also be related to the distance of the object and the image with respect to the pole of the mirror. Let v denote the distance of the image from the pole of the mirror and u denote the distance of the object from the pole of the mirror , then

large Magnification;(m)=-frac{v}{u}.

On combining both the formulas, we get

large Magnification;(m)=frac{h_{i}}{h_{o}}=-frac{v}{u}.
